Starving Arstist Display

Postby Linkin5 » Sat Jan 12, 2008 12:33 am

Okay so as a starving artist myself, I was drawn to the concept of an "starving artists' display" at the marriot this sunday.  My girlfriend saw a commercial for this and told me about it, but I couldn't find anymore information.  Does anyone have anymore details about this event for January 13?

Don't waste your time.  These hotel 'starving artist' shows sell the kind of 'pictures'  that your grandparents hung over their fireplace (unless your grandpa was Claude Monet).  They're worse than that Thomas Kincaide (sp?) 'painter of light' dude. Find out about some of the local art clubs or co-ops in town and check those out---Omaha's an art-rich town with lots of talent.

I agree with nebugeater. Go and decide yourself. It always helps to get your artwork out there.

I didn't mean to sound so harsh about this, but part of my objection to these hotel 'starving artist' shows has to do with the way the stuff is marketed.  I work in a hotel and have seen a few of these shows come through.  It may not apply in this case, but the paintings are usually done in the third world by people who are paid pennies (usually in Latin America) and sold in the US at incredible markups.  So, hey, go check it out.

I would check it if I were you.

Even more so if you are comparing Thomas Kincaid to the Bob Ross stuff old people had.

I have satellite and get local channels from all around the country.  That "starving artists" commercial they have on is the same exact one that is shown everywhere, except the hotel name is different.

I thought it was pretty funny.
