The Wire Apartments (19th and Dodge)
MODS, please move this if there's already a thread.
I received an email today about the Northwestern Bell building (1901 Dodge, I think) being converted to apartments. Is there something already on this project and I completely missed it? At first I thought this was the 19th and Capitol building, but Emporis says the building is on 1901 Dodge St.

This one? Â There is no 1901 Dodge according to the county. Â This would be the closest to that address.

He said "They are some big, ugly red brick buildings"

It's a shame to lose any historical landmark, but I would rather see them die with dignity than watch them rot from neglect.guitarguy wrote:Wow... If you take Jobbers Canyon, Woodmen of the World and Hotel Fontenelle it seems as if Omaha has reduced its skyline in half over the last 50 years. Such a darn shame!

Very true but could the city have at least attempted to preserve the beautiful historic buildings downtown? I'm sure most of us would be proud of downtown if these buildings were still there.RNcyanide wrote:It's a shame to lose any historical landmark, but I would rather see them die with dignity than watch them rot from neglect.guitarguy wrote:Wow... Why yes, of course. I just remember reading that the Fontenelle stood vacant for over a decade while it deteriorated.guitarguy wrote:Very true but could the city have at least attempted to preserve the beautiful historic buildings downtown? Not that it's any consolation, but didn't they preserve part of the Medical Arts building inside First National?iamjacobm wrote:Don't forget the Medical Arts Building or the Post Office or the Butternut building. Now that Omaha has the Clink, the Hilton and many other places to hold conferences, maybe the Kiewit Conference Center can be torn down and the land sold so that FINALLY a hotel could be built ON the mall? Â I suppose in these times for downtown Omaha it would be a 5 story hotel as opposed to a 20 story on, but still.nebport5 wrote:About a month ago they painted the white part on the bottom of the phone building brown. Huge difference. It's amazing what a little paint will do. In fact, I think it looks nice. And for what it's worth, The Kiewit Conference Center still holds the distinction for ugliest building downtown.

I thought there was some kind of announcement about the whitish building going apartment about a year or so ago. Â I do know asbestos removal was done on the building in the last year.
Always a business-oriented city hungry for growth and focused on development with laser intensity, Omaha aimed high, reached for momentum and found critical mass.
Found something from a little while ago:

However I do know that this project is still very much alive and that NUStyle is behind it.This potential redevelopment project comtemplates the conversion of the former 14-story Northwestern Bell office tower into a high-rise apartment building. Twelve full-sized floors and two smaller penthouse floors. Interior parking with access off of Dodge Street. Possible additional vehicle access off of 20th Street.
