Scriptown Brewery

Four blocks to the west, John Fahrer and Scott Stephens are in the midst of renovating what will soon be Scriptown.

Stephens is one of the owners of Lot 2 and Baxter’s in Benson, and Fahrer makes small batches of beer for both restaurants. At both places, Fahrer’s brews have been very popular.

"We cannot keep up with the product," Stephens said.

Stephens and Fahrer began discussing plans for a brewery about a year ago and signed the lease on their space earlier this summer. Fahrer, who has been a homebrewer since 1986 and was named the national homebrewer of the year in 1996, can make just about anything. He’ll continue to make beer specially for Lot 2 and Baxter’s — which won’t be available at Scriptown or elsewhere — and to cycle through small batches of a diverse variety of beers at Scriptown. They’ll begin with four or six taps, Stephens said, and slowly add more as they get going.

Wikipedia wrote:Scriptown was the name of the first subdivision in the history of Omaha, which at the time was located in Nebraska Territory. It was called "Scriptown" because scrip was used as payment, similar to how a company would pay employees when regular money was unavailable. Its original survey placed the location from the Missouri River to North 30th Street, Cuming to Fort Street.

I'm definitely looking forward to it. Omaha is turning into quite a town for breweries. Not to mention the bars that focus on craft brews on tap. Three districts seem to be developing: the Old Market, Benson, and now Farnam Street.

The restaurant was all set to open two weeks ago, when at the last minute a city plumbing inspector raised a red flag over something connected with the brewing setup. New target door opening is November 17.

I almost stopped in last night as I was driving home from Film Streams, but I was just dead tired. I will have to walk over on Thursday or Friday while it is a bit warmer.

Not sure about Mark or Jacob, but I really enjoyed Scriptown. They had some good beers and the place is really nice inside. Staff was knowledgeable and friendly.

Well, I only gave it three stars. They did a great job with the interior, but it really felt totally unfinished, as Brad said, it looked like his kitchen, totally gutted to the bone, ready for renovations... Second, there was no food, but not even peanuts or pretzels were out, third, I know the owner/brewer is a Sessions beer fan, and maybe that is what Brad likes, but for craft beer I was expecting more. It takes more than moving up from a Railroad Home Brewer to putting in 7 Barrel tanks to make good craft beer. The Brown ale was ok, but most other beers were flat and uneventful. But for those who like sessions beers, this might be what you will like, it's just not for me. Oh, and I won't begin to talk about parking in the District, I hope they are thinking about this...

I had a few beers there tonight. I love the interior, with all of the old exposed brickwork, including a wall that still has an old painted sign adorning the bricks. The use of wood in the tables and chairs was also quite attractive.
The beers were generally to my liking, especially the darker ones. Their winter seasonal beer is almost ready, and should be released in the next week or so.
The restaurant will not have a kitchen, but will have their own dedicated food truck parked out by the back entrance. The truck will mostly serve sandwiches, and should be in place before the end of the year.
I really, really loved the old photographs of this block of Farnam Street taken from the dawn of the 20th Century up to the 1950s. The bar building once housed a Piggly Wiggly grocery store!

John gave us a tour of his brewery the other day. We tried Pitch's House Beer made here, St. Meinrad...
and at the Homy Inn, their Saddle Creek Wheat has now replaced Boulevard's Wheat on tap, all straight out of the barrels.
