Blue Angels returning for 2017 Offutt air show

Nebraskans will have a chance to see both teams in 2016. The Blue Angels will appear at the Guardians of Freedom Airshow in Lincoln May 7-8, and the Thunderbirds will perform at the Offutt air show July 30-31. Those dates were announced a year ago.

The Navy’s Blue Angels precision flight team will make its second performance in four years at the Offutt Air Force Base’s Defenders of Freedom Open House and Air Show in 2017, the Navy announced Monday.
The performances are planned for July 1-2, 2017, the Navy said.

The Blue Angels’ last appearance at Offutt was in 2014, and the Thunderbirds’ was in 2010.

The show is returning for 2016 and 2017, but its future after that is uncertain because of a proposed reconstruction of Offutt’s sole runway that is expected to begin in late 2017.

I saw it reported that the Sat crowd was at 100,000. From being there I do not think it was over stated.

The 2017 Defenders of Freedom Open House and Air Show, scheduled for July 1-2, can’t be held because the 55th Wing’s aircraft and crews are so heavily committed to overseas missions, said Drew Nystrom, an Offutt spokesman.......................

If I remember correctly a 2018 show is highly unlikely too do to the scheduled runway work.

Well that sucks....I had planned on going this year since the Blue Angels were going to be there. Next summer will be my 5th summer in Bellevue and I have yet to be home when the airshow is going on. I just wanted to have a BBQ and swim in my pool in the backyard while the show was going on. Looks like I may have to wait a few more years.

They're giant wastes of money for the base. They were, however, good fundraisers.

I'm glad to see them go. Awful experience when I was in, having to work 12 hour shifts on the weekends.

I find it an offensive waste of money to have those air shows every year. Every two years is still more then enough.

I've been to a few and they're okay. Now that it has been a while, air shows look more like a waste. I won't be disappointed.

Air shows are a good public relations tool. Taxpayers get to see in person part of what their billions in tax dollars are being spent on.

The shows are a resource drain though. Maybe scaling them back to a two year rotation, and/or switching with Lincoln Air Guard base would help.

The show in Lincoln is every five years


I have heard, and have no idea if it is true, that the flight time of the military aircraft would happen anyway as training time if that is the waste that some are concerned with.
