Brewburger's (108th and L) Old NE Beef Co.

The former 'Nebraska Beef Company' (and before that, Shoney's) location on 108th and L is going to see some action again soon...Yeves Menard (of Charlie's fame) will be opening another restaurant in that location, although it won't be another Charlie's, it's slated to be a sports bar.

The developer must have wanted some ridiculous amount of money for Omaha Steaks not to have bought that.  Its two feet from their corporate office.  Nice to see something going in there though, although I still miss the pullout of Shoney's (that was their last location here).

Omaha Steaks is not in the Restaurant business.  I think a sports bar might work there, its not the best location.

Hmmmm ... I never knew there was a chain of Omaha Steakhouse [brand] restaurants. :)

Phoenix and Jax are about the only ones I get to with any semi regularity. I'll have to check them out.

Omaha Steaks Restaurant IN Omaha

Post by snekse »

Though I've never really liked the steaks from Omaha Steaks, I've always wondered why they didn't open an Omaha location.  Seems like a no brainier for sucking money out of tourists.

Omaha Steaks ISN'T in the restaurant business, they're a supplier of quality meat products.  Practically EVERY nice restaurant in the city serves OMAHA STEAKS brand beef, and they all advertise the fact that they use Omaha Steaks as a supplier on their menu.

Just thinking off the top of my head, in the downtown/Old Market area, here are some of the restaurants that use Omaha Steaks as a supplier: Upstream, Omaha Prime, Passport, Flatiron, and I'm sure there are several others.  That's a who's who of restaurants.

Why would Omaha Steaks want to enter this highly competitive business that they're not familiar with?  Let them stick to what they're good at - producing the beef for others to prepare.  I think that's what Nebraska Beef lost sight of, and one of the reason they went out of business.  They were doing something that they're not masters of, running a restaurant.

Omaha Steaks ISN'T in the restaurant business
So when they refer to the 'fifth generation of the Simon family'... this is some rogue sibling who went off and is using the family name to run some unaffiliated restaurant chain by the same name?

A few years back when Omaha Steaks was renovating their store on 96th and J (moving the retail from the south east side to the north east side) they were talking about opening a restaurant there. That was maybe 4 years ago. I have been wondering what the hold up has been.

I have been to the one at Kingston Plantation @ Myrtle Beach.  Was at a conference there about two years ago and we got in late and asked at the counter if there was any place to grab something to eat.  They went on to tell us how great there restaurant was, and the history of Omaha Steaks AND that this was one of a select few restaurants they had!  It was definitely an Omaha Steaks place by look and feel.  Was a good meal too.  They cut their "sales pitch" short when they found out we were from Omaha and had heard of Omaha Steaks !

If Omaha Steaks is not in the restaurant business at some level then someone should tell them about this place.  I think there is some infringement going on.   :;):

I just don't think they deserve the price premium they charge.  Something about them just seems off to me.  The taste and texture almost suggest they marinade or inject something into the meat.  Whatever it is they do, it's not something I enjoy.

Stoysich and Just Good Meat both have some of the better steaks here in Omaha, but I usually buy my steaks from the B & B Locker in Wynot, NE.  Their steaks just plain taste better.  It's odd, but they just taste more like beef than most other steaks I've had.  And their prices are inline with what you'd pay at the grocery store for a quality steak that's not on sale.

They come to the Omaha Farmer's Market each week and also ship nation wide.  You can get steaks fresh or frozen, though I'd recommend frozen unless you pick them up in Wynot.  She normally packs them 2 per package, so if you want your steaks packed individually, be sure to let her know.  Tell her Derek from Omaha sent you.

The Omaha Steakhouse is associated with Omaha Steaks only through the food they prepare.  They use Omaha Steaks products, and Omaha Steaks allows them to use a similar logo.  Omaha Steaks does not own any of these locations to my knowledge.

The website seems to imply that their is some family tie.  I can't imagine OmahaSteaks would let just anyone use their name in the way this restaurant is... obviously their not the only establishment to feature OmahaSteaks products on their menu.

I work for Omaha Steaks.  This is from our Public Relations Manager:

"Omaha Steakhouse is a small chain of restaurants owned by a company called Culinaire. Under a special licensing agreement with Omaha Steaks, they are allowed to use our logo, etc. on their menu and promotional efforts as they buy and serve Omaha Steaks exclusively. We have probably had this agreement with them for about five years. Most of these steakhouses are located in hotels in Arizona and Florida. I hope that this helps answer your question."

Back to the subject of the thread

This will be opening on Oct. 15th

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=2 ... d=10149809
Yves Menard, chef and owner of Charlie's on the Lake, is opening a new sports bar called Brewburger's in the former Nebraska Beef Co. at 4629 S. 108th St.
He said the restaurant will offer 50 handcrafted beers from microbreweries in Colorado, the Midwest, Belgium and other countries, all served in beer-specific glasses

The menu includes burgers made from shrimp, crab, salmon, elk, veal, bison and beef, and what Menard hopes will be the restaurant's signature: the "old-fashioned" sandwich. It's made with brisket cured in a salt-and-sugar brine, then smoked over maple wood. He said it was inspired by "Jewish smoked meats" found in delis in his native Montreal.

and as a side not for those that have nmentioned this location elswehere.
Menard said he also has sold Charlie's Seafood & Grill, the restaurant at 8727 Maple St. that he closed early this year. He said the property will be turned into a gas station and convenience store.

Checked this place out tonight. I wouldn't say it's the greatest sports bar, but maybe they are working out the kinks? They had probably 6 or 8 large sized plasma tv's and a couple of smaller ones. While there was many games on tonight they had one of the bigger televisions tuned to Cops, had the same two games on all the others and they shut one off after the Missouri vs Colorado game was over.

However, the food was fantastic for a sports themed place. I had the signature brisket sandwich with homemade fries and onion rings and my two friends had lamb and seafood burgers. All of us agreed we would go back and the beer selection is great.

It always blows my mind when sports bars can't figure out what sports are on, or have someone in charge of the TVs - especially in Nebraska, especially on college game days.

Went to a prominent to-remain-nameless sports bar in the Haymarket before an NU game two years ago.  We were in the basement, and at one point the TVs had NASCAR and golf (neither of which are sports), WNBA and whatever movie came on NBC after the Notre Dame game.  This was mid-afternoon with probably 20 games on including GamePlan.  I was amazed.

I agree. All sports bar owners should go to the Stadium at Mall of America before opening. They have a tv jockey there who's only job is to man the tv's, announce what games are on certain tv's and what games are coming up. Quite a few "sports bars" here just turn on Fox Sports, ESPN, ESPN2, and maybe another channel or two and let it ride. It's laziness on the staff's part and quite a few people don't want to be a nuisance so they let it go.

I asked our server tonight if we could get a tv on the OU game and she acted like I wanted to get an atom split and then came back telling us that they didn't think it was on. It was on KETV and I didn't bother to tell her after that.

I guess I can kind of understand the show after Notre Dame being on NBC, but Cops? Fox doesn't even cover college football and didn't have anything remotely close to sports on today.

I work at a "sports bar" as a part time job on the weekends.  The problem I always run in to it that the wait staff is usually young women who don't have a clue about sports and don't even realize there are TV's in the bar.  There are a lot of Sunday nights when I come in to work and EVERY tv is on something other than sports or are on the NFL Sunday ticket "blank" screen.  As far as paying a TV jockey.... Where are the managers?  It only takes me about 1 or 2 min to change EVERY tv in the bar and get the sound set up right.

We ate there a couple of weeks ago. Summing up our thoughts:

Food: B+
Decor/Ambiance: D
Beer Selection: C+*

Our party ordered three different burgers (California, Blue Jay & Lamb), and one brisket. The only complaint on the food was that the Blue Jay burger was ordered medium rare, but came out well. Kudos to the waitress who noticed it when she came back a couple minutes after serving us and noticed it immediately and offered to replace it; which was accepted.

The Decor/ambiance: all of us expected something more behind the people responsible for Charlies on the Lake. Other than the few Plasmas, this is clearly a restaurant first. The atmosphere isn't one of 'hang out for 3-4 hours, drink your fill, and stumble out.' We felt the subtle pressure of it being time to leave about 20 minutes after the last person was done with their meal. Bathrooms were tacky with beer girl posters (coors, miller, bud) plastered over the ceiling and really sent an odd message considering the upscale beer selection.

As for the beer. I give it a C+ rating only because 3/4 of the selection are microbrews stocked in just about every store around town. However, they do a have a few imports that make it worth at least one trip, plus many of these are served in the matching glassware which is important, trendy, and downright cool; especially for many of the Belgian & German brews. I'll give my rating the asterisk though because 1) If selection is important, you still can't beat the spread Old Chicago puts up even if they are an "evil chain restaurant" and 2) most of the beer menu was walking the line of mass-production (Boulevard, Shiner, New Belgium, etc).

Make at least one trip though for:
Pauwel Kwak
St. Bernardus Abt 12
Tripel Karm eliet

Which I can guarantee you will not find any where else in town.

No wonder I can't get a decent steak when dining out in Omaha :;):  Do restaurants have access to different products than the consumer?  Maybe a higher grade or something?  That list is kind of funny considering how some people will swear that one restaurant's steaks are far superior to another when both are on that list.  Odd that Mister C's and Gorat's are on that list since they both display their prize winning steers in photos in the restaurant.  I'd be curious to know if ALL their steaks come from Omaha Steaks or just certain cuts.

Sounds like a niche for a new product - "The Remote Vote" TM.  Like those trivia games at each table, but this would simply be a method to let the customers vote which channels should be displayed on which TVs.

That's just not true.  I know all three of these beers are served at Dario's Brasserie and is served in the correct glassware (e.g. The St. Bernardus 12 chalice).

I don't remember how the ranking of the meat goes, but I heard the you can not get the best of the best because the best of the best restaurants all over the world buy that meat before it hits the market.

It's not so much "before" it hits the market.  It's just never available to the market in general.  The same thing goes for sushi and wine, and any other product that can command a premium mark-up in a restaurant.

Restaurants know they have to have something that separates them from the home kitchen to command their margins, and the quality of product is a good a start.  They will protect that advantage.

I don't know about all restaurants, but for one in particular back east (Peter Luger), I do know that at one time the chef and one of the owners would personally go to the packing houses and select the cuts in person. I've been told that they don't do this anymore, however.

I'm sure some restaurants do this today, and others buy from suppliers such as Omaha Steaks.

I'm also sure that the finer meat markets (like Stoysich) have access to the same cuts that the finer restaurants do.

A great steak is subjective (but not as much as BBQ is!), but it does depend on a good cut to begin with, and a little attention to detail in preparation. I do miss Ross', I think that was probably the best steak place around.

And no, a giant deepfried onion that ends up looking like an exploded pineapple is not the secret to a great steak! :)

Buy beef live on the hoof and have it processed.  Split it with some and buy a 1/2 or a 1/4.  You CAN get the best cuts and the rest is cut to your preferance.  The ground beef will be top grade also.  Of course if you get a "bad" animal then you have that to deal withbut for the most part if you find someone that knows what the are doing, knows how the animal is feed and you trust you cannot go wrong

"You can get a good look at a T-bone by sticking your head up a bull's |expletive|, but wouldn't you rather take the butcher's word for it?"

LOL...  why stop there?  Go get some animal husbandry degrees and a harness and start artificially inseminating cows.  Seems a long way to go for a USDA prime cookout. :;):
