That's too bad.

When in the heck is Channel 3 going to realize that the revolving door of Anchors is what is hurting their ratings.  People in this town like stability, wither its good or not.

Come on. Five years is way more than enough time to let an anchor team settle in. Especially this one. Peterson was familiar to viewers and so was Ward.

If it's not working, fix it.

The older Generation, That actually watches the most news, at standared times, Watches that Bad news cast over on Channel six where the Graphics, Video and Audio never match. Because they Like Jim Flowers 25+ years in town, John Nicely 25+ years in town, and Dave Webber 30+ years in town.  Those of us that actually watch Action 3 don't always catch the news because of our busy schedule.  I find myself watching WOWT Channel 6 the most because I catch it at off times on News on One, Cox channel 1.

Also they may have been here for 5 years now, but the "Action 3 News" format has only been around for a year or so now.

Also, how many people did they run off when they went through their whole KM3 news phase... No Sports, but "For What its worth Commentary"

Looks like they are going after the younger crowd.

Carol Wang comes to Omaha from KXAS (NBC) in Dallas/Fort Worth and Carlo Carletto is currently working as a general assignment reporter at KFMB (CBS) in San Diego, Calif.

This is too bad.  I liked Deb and Greg as a team.  I'm interested to see if these new anchors are better, and if they're not....well, why bring them in?

Of all the news people in Omaha (excluding KPTM and KXVO) I wish Travis Justice were let go.  I can't stand him.

Travis is the Glue of that Station.  He is not going anywhere no should he.  He does a good sportscast for the very short time they give him, and he does an excellent radio program.

I agree with this..Especially about the crapola Channel Six puts out on a daily and nightly basis..

Now I do like the look of these fresh faces taking Deb and Greg's place..Especially Carol Wang..Who I've seen on the news down in Dallas-Ft Worth..

..Ciao..LiO....Peace

I have to agree with Streets here, I have really never liked Travis Justice and the arrogance that he is so proud of. I also find it hard to listen to him when he does Creighton games because of that. The only time I enjoyed his broadcasting was when he took on the UNO administration and brought them to their knees. He fits in with Big Sports 590 attitude of being a 'non-partisan' radio station which 'tells it like it is', but you can only take so much of that - or at least I can only take so much of that. I turn 590 off more than any other station I have listened to.

For those of you who are not Travis fans, it may interest you to know that in the past two weeks, Travis received a severe butt spanking from his bosses due to a comment he made.

What comment did he make?

And, Brad, if Justice is the "glue" of the station, and they're losing their two lead anchors, what does that say about "the glue"?  Haha.  :;):

I guess I'm the only one who thought Deb Ward stunk (Greg Peterson wasn't too bad).  I welcome a shake up... personally, I think all of the local newscasts could use a makeover.  This pair KMTV has recruited at least LOOK like a step up... we'll have to wait and see how they perform.

Well, as long as we're judging by looks, the guy looks like a dumb jock, a self-proclaimed "sports addict."  Sounds like a winner.  We'll see....

Let the subjective comments continue....

Thank goodness they are going to try something different.

KM3 newscasts over the years have just baffled me. For my tastes, they have just been putrid for so long. The current anchors only took a low quality product and made it even lower. And Greg Petersen's voice is so grating. Deb Ward, could she get hired anywhere else? Their weathercasters over the years, yuk. They have been a distant third and deservedly so. An embarrassment to a 150,000 metro let alone ours. And this latest round of graphics..... at least they distract from the anchors.

Now to Travis.... can't say he is my favorite but at least I could tell he was being bad as part of the act or show. Travis is the only reason I would stay in the room if they were on and someone else was in charge of the remote control.

There, I have vented a lot of years of frustration with this station. But before I go, the ones that really should be fired are the ones who have hired all of this no-talent personnel over the years. Or perhaps, these people have been working with a budget that is just so small that they could not afford to hire talent.

Channel 3 should just get out of the news business.
My son got a 27 on his ACT. No this score is not as high as what Jeff's son achieved. But one has to remember the paternal gene-pool my son has to overcome. On a PGPAB [Paternal Gene-Pool Adjusted Basis], my son's score is a 37 and Jeff's son's PGPAB ACT score is 19.

I was hoping and still think now that Journal Broadcast owns them that they can start to move up.

As far as the weather goes, Ryan McPike does a good job, not too over hyped like flowers, and they have GREAT equipment, especially during severe weather.  With the Edition Of Dean Wysockie they have a good weather department.

By the way their bios are now gone from the action3 website.

Apparently Travis is still a bit miffed that we had to eject him from the building about a year ago, after he went on a rampage because we were out of a redemption prize his one kid wanted to redeem tickets for.  The F word was used so frequently, while he screamed at a 16 year old game pro, that other families started to complain, and he had to be escorted out.  The next day he bagged us on Z92, and that was the end of it.  Or so we thought.

The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights are doing a promo where each week, a different bar in a rotation is the host site for pre- and post game festivities.  Travis was doing a promo for it, and read the first place, and when he came to the next one, said "I hate this place so much I refuse to mention their name".  What was hysterical is that Journal had just done a presentation to us on why we should do advertising with them.  We had no choice but to cancel our relationship with the Knights,  who were horribly embarrassed, and the Knights filed a formal complaint against the station, threatening to pull their advertising.  So did another sports entity in Omaha who we have a strong relationship with, who were concerned the negative press might reflect on them as well.  And of course, the Sales Department complained to upper management.  All over a $1.50 redemption prize.

me thinks some times some people's 15 minutes of fame should never have happened.  Based on what I saw of Travis when he use to do his opinion piece instead of the news --- he reeked of arrogance --- based on what the Chef has written --- it wasnt an act.

having been to inplay a few times, i can say it was a nice place to go, but seeing that they whined about Travis Justice is fine ,but screwing the Knights over because of him will prompt me to Never return to inplay again. If you have a problem with Travis, fine have a problem with him. Just because he is doing pub for a Knights event doesn't mean you throw them under the bus.

but screwing the Knights over
based on what omahachef wrote I am not sure why you think Inplay screwed over the knights. Sounds like Travis did is the one who 'screwed' them over

We did not dump the Knights at all.  Since Travis was doing the promoting of the event and refused to say the name "inPlay", the Knights apologized profusely but there really wasn't anything anyone could do at that point except announce it the night of the game.  The idea was to do pre and post-game fun at the bar of the week, but that wasn't possible, as no one knew it was to be held at inPlay.  I am sure we will do events with the Knights in the future

omahachef --- have you thought of using travis's comments to advertise inPlay?  his fan club can't be very big and people that don't care for him seems to be large.

Come to the place Travis's can't stand --- free tokens for anti-travis fans.

Brad- I hate to disagree with you but I think that the only reason TJ is still at channel 3 is the huge amount of free advertising KMTV3 gets due to his spots on the TNT show. They couldn't buy that much advertising for their lame station. They nixed for what it's worth and have been trimming down his sports spot for years.  Travis has become the "crazy aunt" of the newscast. You know he's there but you don't see him often. Yes the new news team Barbie, Ken and Travis??????

Journal Broadcast Group owns Channel 3, Z92 and BigSports 590, as well as a bunch of other local stations.

I think they bought Channel 3 last year thinking they could use Travis and Todd n Tyler and all their other stations to turn channel 3 around.

Wither its good or bad, in Omaha people don't like change... and that's been Channel 3's problem over the past several years.

omahachef in the email I received from the knights canceling the Knights tour at inplay, they stated that it was inplays decision to cancel the event. Am I to believe that TJ was the only one promoting the event? if so than the Knights are in more trouble then I thought they were. I still stand by my opinion that you threw them under the bus.

KMTV and Change

Post by Hal Dawg »

KMTV didn't have success with its "standard" news format from (before) 2001 to 2003.

Then it tried the "For What It's Worth" strategy to try and change things up (from 2003-2005).

Then it went with the "Action News" format in 2006.

In those five years, the talent remained the same (Greg Peterson, Deborah Ward, Travis Justice and Ryan McPike) while the ratings either went down or stayed the same.

Are you saying they should have stayed with the "standard" news format to this day?

Heck, five years is a long time for an anchor team to be together when you're not the No. 1 station in the market.

Under Emmis Broadcasting:
They got rid of sports, which drove people away from all three news casts
They Started For what its worth, which drove people away from the 10pm news cast
They Got rid of the 6pm News, which drove the remaining viewers away.

So when they are at their all time "Low"

Journal buys them and they:
Bring Back Sports.
Bring Back the 6 pm news.

They need to quit making changes.  May be Deb and Greg needed to go but now they need to stop the changes and sit on what they have and let it be.  Slow and steady is the way to go.

I know this is nitpicking... but Ryan McPike has not been there for all 5 years with the rest of them.  They had that middle aged dark haired guy and Ryan was the "weekend" guy.  When they were in the middle of all their changes they decided they wanted the young camera friendly weatherman and they promoted Ryan.

Another classic example of how little-watched KMTV is when it comes to news. (And I'm not slamming you, Brad.)

Who was the girl KMTV had on at 5pm this evening?  She did a good job, and looks pretty hot too. :)

I get tired of Travis constantly bashing Nebraska for the sake of bashing Nebraska.  590 continually runs the spot where he is saying Iowa is a better state for high school football because they have more D1 players each year.  First of all, who really gives a **** about this?  However, he is doing a sports show and can discuss that if he wants.  The thing that REALLY bugs me is that Iowa has 70% MORE people than Nebraska.  They damn well better have more D1 athletes.  However, that won't stop him from distorting facts to fit his agenda.

I think Matt does a decent job (but in my time in Birmingham, I certainly did not see all the things he speaks about regarding Alabama football).  Travis, on the other hand, tries to bash anything Nebraska.

Travis Loves Omaha.  You are just hearing what you want.  If you listen to the whole 2 hour show every day like I do,you will see.  Most haters just hear a little bit then they run with that.  Travis is a VERY fair and sports talk show host.
