Varsity Sports Cafe & Roman Coin Pizza - Two Metro Locations

Post by ChadJK »

I've heard they've closed their Dundee location. Can anyone from that neck of the woods confirm?

I have heard this as well. Signs are on the door says 'for lease' and there's a pink sign from management saying they are permanently closed.

It is closed. It was not the same management and ownership as the other locations.

Post on Facebook said that this closing does not affect their other locations. Pretty vague.

That’s too bad. When it first opened we went there several times, but once we moved out of the area we never went back. Hope another restaurant moves in, it’s a nice space.

I live a block and a half away and have been about 10 times. The wings and pizza were really the only things on the menu that were even remotely good. Everything else was pretty close to plain bad that we tried. Not surprised about this closing.

One of my kids used to live near there. He never ate there. We didn’t either when we drove past it to get to his house.

This is unfortunate news indeed..

I ate pizza there several times over the years and they served a very good pizza pie. Their all meat special was especially good…

I do hope that the location gets picked up by something that will keep good foot traffic.

Roman Coin has great pizza, too bad they couldn’t make it. Let’s get a dive bar back and put in a new 49er.

I sort of feel like the dive bar fad has been beat to death.

I've never been to the Dundee location. It's not convenient at all. However, the 96th & Q location is relatively close to my work, so I go their for their lunch specials. I really like their pizza. It's not any sort of artisan pizza cooked in stone oven or whatever, but it's just good pizza. They also tend to make it a little saucy which I love.

If I remember right the 49er had food too did it not? Anyway, 49er 2.0 would be perfect. Throw in a shuffleboard table and a small stage and it would just be more modern and minus the clove cigarette smell.

Varsity has announced the closing of their 144 & F Street Location.
Varsity Sports Cafe wrote:To all our loyal customers and friends, we regrettably will be closing the Millard location at 144th and F Street at the end of this weekend. Thanks to our present and past employees for making this a successful restaurant. It was a
pleasure to serve the Millard and surrounding communities for the past 17 years. At the end of the day, a viable lease agreement could not be reached for all the parties involved. Even though we are in the midst of selling our businesses to new ownership, this saddens us very much. Our other two locations are open at 96th & Q and in Bellevue at 36th and Highway 370 and would love to serve you.

There's a dead center walking with Cilantros moving away as well as Varsity. I've never eaten at Charlie's on the Lake and likely never will with how awful the reviews have trended lately.

To be fair, Cilantros is on the north side of the street, while Varsity and Charlie's are in the plaza on the south side.

And a fair point it is, but combined, I think since that gym closed down over there, it's been on a slow decline.

F street is closed as well.
I don't think the new apartment complex has opened yet either. https://www.148place.com/

At the end of the day, a viable lease agreement could not be reached for all the parties involved.
It really makes you wonder just what the numbers look like. Let's pretend that the landlord raised their rent by $1000/month on the new lease. That makes that Varsity location no longer viable? Just how narrow are their margins. Obviously, I'm not privy to any of that, but it always makes me wonder. I understand a tiny ma-and-pa operation barely scraping by that cannot continue when their rent gets increased. However, an established business with multiple locations. You'd really think that while they'd be unhappy about the rent increase they'd plod along anyway. Of course, it could be something other than money too. There's lots of stuff in lease agreements beyond just the rent amount.

Varsity has new owners.

None of us are getting any younger and know that with new ownership will also bring new ideas, perspectives and leadership.

The four of us partners have been together for almost 30 years. We made it through opening(closing) four bars/restaurants.
With two great location still going strong.

The “bars” became all of our lives— and with that we want to take the time to “thank” all of our past and present employees, customers, and friends. We are very grateful of what you created for us. Without you, we would have never survived.

When we say friends— we want you to know that the people we have met through the years at all of our locations, are some of the best people we have ever met.

Other than a huge”thank you” to you all—-we are kind of at a loss for words.
Thank you for supporting us in every way possible.

May you continue to patronize the new owners.
They are great guys and intend to NOT “ fix what isn’t broken”!!

Cheers to what comes next in life for all of us!!!

I pop into the one on Q St for lunch on occasion... their pizza with cheese sticks for about $11 is a good deal, IMO. I actually miss having one closer to our house when they had the store on F St.

Hopefully thing don't change significantly from how they are run now - food is good, prices are reasonable.

Hopefully, the new owners don't make too many changes. Varsity has one of the better values in lunch menus in the area and I really like their pizza sauce. I get their personal pizza lunch special, upgrade the side to parmesan sticks, and it's a ton of food for like $10.

Same! Wish they'd bring back another location further west. I missed out on going to the one on 144th & F St when I had the chance.

Glad they’re not closing. Have been several times over the years; Scott is (was) a relative by marriage. Great guy, crazy/good work ethic.

The former pizza location at 49th and Dodge has signs in the window that seem to indicate a Japanese restaurant with a name of Shika (or similar, I was driving by at 30 mph) will go in here.
