Old Postcards

Post by stormchaser »

I recently acquired some old postcards from the early 1900s of the Omaha/Lincoln area that I thought were kinda neat. One of them is of the State Capitol building in Lincoln (that's mis-labeled as being in Omaha which I thought was interesting).

You can see Union Station in the top left, the other 3 buildings I can't tell for sure what they are in the image below. Any ideas? I won an online auction so I haven't received them yet to look closer.

These are the ones from Lincoln (with the mis-labeled Capitol building), St Joseph, MO, etc

I believe that:
#7 is the old St Joseph hospital near 10th and Castellar in Omaha
#8 is the old territorial Capitol where Central high school is, the namesake of Capitol Ave in Omaha

Nice - thanks! That makes more sense, not a photo "from" St Joseph, MO, "St Joseph" was the name of hospital in Omaha.

I ended up labeling/merging things together since how I have it above, it's a little confusing/unclear.

So this is what I have currently:

#1 - Union Station in Omaha
#2 - Not sure
#3 - Not sure
#4 - Not sure
#5 - St Joseph Hospital in Omaha
#6 - Isn't this the State Capitol in Lincoln prior to them adding the tower? (it's mislabeled if it is)
#7 - Zippy mentioned this is the Territorial Capitol - it's labeled as "U.S. Court House and Post Office in Lincoln" so not 100% sure - especially since #6 seems mislabeled.
#8 - Them are some big apples :P

#3 and #6 are real photos (obviously) which tends to make them more valuable/unique...

#6 does not resemble the current building in Lincoln at all

I would have to do some searching, but I believe there was another building in Lincoln before the current one was built. This looks like it might be it, from what I have seen before

There was Omaha as the base, but was it as a territory before statehood
For the record  NEBUGEATER does not equal BUGEATER    !!!!!!!

Use the search feature and look for an old thread also about old postcards. There is a link in the first post which will take you to a website for old Omaha postcards and in that website and they’re all labeled where they’re at.

Cool, thanks! That helped fill in some of the blanks.

#2 - Is the L. L. Brandeis & Sons Building
#3 - Is the Presbyterian Theological Seminary
#4 - Is the Woodman of the World Building

FWIW - I would have loved to have snagged this one for obvious reasons. Always wondered what that tornado looked like and it was definitely a beast.

Glad to know a century ago people were running outside with their camera when a tornado hit just like now.

The wikipedia article(so take it fwiw) on the capitol has that same #6 image identified as the second structure built for the capitol in Lincoln. The accompanying picture also identifies it as being Lincoln.
