Good sushi restaurant?

Does anybody have a recommendation for a good sushi restaurant in town?

We used to LOVE Sushi Japan on 144th and Center, but the service there has been so bad the last several visits that we're looking for somewhere new. It seems that they lost at least one of their chefs and most of the excellent wait staff that they used to have.. and the replacements are... (how do I say this nicely?).. not quite up to par.

We've tried Blue. The service there is equally slow and bad.

We've tried Hiro. The food there was okay, but nothing to get excited about.

So.. does anybody have a favorite sushi restaurant that they'd like to recommend?

I really like Hiro on 129th and Maple
or Saurka Bana on 74th and Dodge (behind Indigo Joes)

Sakura Bana (the former Sushi Ichiban) is hands down my all time anywhere in the US favorite sushi joint. Very traditional, not trendy, but fan-freaking-tastic.

Just south of Dodge (as stated above) next to Indigo Joe's and Stereo West.

I have tried, and liked, Blue. It is very stylish. I am a big fan of Sakura Bana, however, and can't wait to try their new location. For once I will find a place to park!

I don't know why I've never thought to try Sakura Bana. I guess the look of the old rundown building always kind of scared me off. I will be checking out the new location VERY soon though!!

On KPTM news this evening they said that Blue is looking at opening a place near 168th and W. Center.
That many restaurants have closed in the last few months on chesseburger row but others are waiting to open.

I went to Sushi Yama last night at 84th and Giles in the Brentwood Square. Not all the atmosphere of the big places, but Good Sushi and Good prices.

Can you imagine how much Sushi you are going to sell at a bar like that... When you have a few martini's and you are not thinking quite as clear and you will power is a big gone and you don't think as much about your wallet.... I guess what I am saying WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA!

Urban Wine Company added a Sushi Chef on Thursday, Friday and Saturday Nights.

Apparently you can order Sushi in the Red Lounge and they make it at Blue Sushi and walk it over to Red for you.

Tonight I went and checked out the new location of Sakura Bana (the former Sushi Ichiban). I was surprised when I walked in as I was expecting something much larger. The new store is nice, bright and clean. The Sushi and Service were great as always.

Sushi Japan is the best by far - Behind the Old Chicago on 144th and Center

Get the Mark Diablo and Super Dragon - you will not go anywhere else for sushi.

I have to agree about Sushi Japan. I think they have the best sushi in town, and (usually) the best service too. If only they had more parking. Going there on a Friday night can be painful.

The Mark Diablo is good, but the Firecracker is hands down my favorite. I have never tried the Super Dragon, but I will be sure to try it next time we are there.

I have also become more of a fan of Hiro over the last couple of months. I especially love their Wasabi Stinger.... yum!! On Friday and Saturday nights, they have a happy hour from 10pm to midnight where a bunch of their sushi is half price. Can't beat late night sushi!

I have marked Blue off of my sushi list. I do like some of the rolls that they offer, but the service there is always so horrible.

You know we order the same thing every time and add one new roll to our list...

We have never tried that one. Super Dragon is the best roll ever invented. Being in judo for as long as I have - I got to know ALOT of Japanese people - everyone of them think that Sushi Japan is the best after I take them. Most of the people that go to Blue honestly don't have a clue what they are missing out on. Blue is good but its certainly not Sushi Japan. We go to different sushi restaurants for lunch sometimes just to make sure that Sushi Japan is the best - and everytime we are reassured that our little restaurant is better.

I probably have already said this on this thread - but I agree - Sushi Japan is by far my favorite sushi restaurant. I usually do not order rolls but get sashimi. I will have to try their Super Dragon one of these days. I like to sit at the bar and watch their handy work so I only regular Blue and Sushi Japan.

I found Blue to be too gimmicky

- They have some good fish but it just doesn't appeal to me. I certainly understand why people enjoy it but for me - Just not my scene.

Cucumber water and presentation is nice but I am a bigger fan of actual taste.

Whats the best at Blue? Maybe I have been too hard on them. I will try them again if I can convince my wife to go back and not go to Sushi Japan.

Hiro, Ichiban, and Yama all have Sushi bars. Where you live you should try Yama. Its not much for Atmosphere, but it great and priced well.

Yeah - I need to try Yama. I can not explain why I haven't been there yet. I could walk there - well maybe not this week. The next time I have a date I will go there.

As for Blue - I do like the presentation but I have to agree that is the price you have to pay as for service. It probably is the slowest place around. At first I liked the atmosphere but have to agree that it now is trying too much to be somewhat upscale and the place to be seen - given the neighborhood.

Yes, Sushi Blue wins for design. Although Hiro and especially Hiro 88 aren't bad on design either, and the sushi tends to be quite a bit better than the Blue chain. For the BEST sushi in town, go to Sushi Japan and do it omakase style, which is basically sitting at the bar and letting the very talented sushi professionals do what they do best. It really is the best way to judge the quality of the chef. Sakura Bana can be very good as well, though I have been surprisingly disappointed with their rice at times.

Depends on how much you eat. 13 dollars per person for lunch and 23 for dinner. All you can eat, not a buffett though they make it to order still.

IMHO: Wasabi if lacking quality. Far below Blue, Hiro, or Urban Wine & Sushi. If $ is all you care about, Wasabi is probably your better bet, even compared to happy hour pricing. But if you want sushi rolls that don't all taste the same, avoid Wasabi.

I wouldn't say Wasabi is the best sushi place in town, but they are the only ones with Sushi Pizza. It is a strange little dish made of sushi rice coated in panko and fried, then topped with sushi toppings such as spicy crab and that weird little spicy mayo they use. They are oddly addictive. Plus, Wasabi has a decent variety on their menu beyond just sushi.

Blue has some delicious maki rolls (my boyfriend can't get enough of the Hawaiian roll) but they seem to focus too much on those and appetizers. For actual sushi (fish on a pillow of rice with a touch of wasabi) Sushi Japan has shown me the best variety and quality.

I ate at Okinawa Sushi at the L Street Marketplace a couple weeks ago. It is the only sushi place I've been so far since moving here very recently. I really enjoyed it and will definitely go back.

I’ve eaten at many sushi places. I would not consider any of them to offer a “romantic” atmosphere. They seem mostly designed for groups.
